Artist Biography

Amy Redmond is an art director, design educator and visual artist whose work is connected by a passion for letterforms. Composed by hand with metal and wood type, her letterpress prints explore the duality of glyphs as language and image, concrete and abstract. She works in her private letterpress studio, Amada Press, and is a founding member of Partners in Print: a non-profit arts organization that brings people together by using old printing presses to amplify new voices, share knowledge, and spark creativity.

Description of Process

THANKS is a chromatic composition that reimagines glyphs as building blocks for new letterforms. The handset metal and wood type is composed as two separate forms, each void of meaning until one is overprinted upon the other and the message is revealed. The color combinations were chosen for their ability to simultaneously unify the design and reveal its underlaying structure.

This edition, printed in two sets of colors, was letterpress printed on a Colt's Armory platen press. It has inspired the creation of a full alphabet in this style, whose development is almost complete.
