Artist Biography
After an academic background in astrophysics and a career as a data scientist, I decided to concentrate on something that obsessed me all along: visual art. I am interested in ways of representing shapes or ideas without directly drawing them and in combining, transforming, and overlapping simple geometric shapes. These compositions keep me thinking, moving, and reinterpreting the work as I look at it. My work incorporates a variety of modern printmaking methods including letterpress prints, linoleum cuts, and plotter drawings.
Description of Process
The interaction of simple geometric forms (in this case lines) to produce new forms and patterns has been a focus of my work. I started exploring this series on the press to see what kinds of patterns my lead type ornaments could produce. Then I created digital versions of the type in Affinity Illustrator to make it easier experiment and build intuition for how to set the type to produce desired effects in the print. I printed this piece on a Vandercook No. 4 proof press with a rotary chase made by Dry Inc. and 36-point lead type ornaments cast by Swamp Press. The type was rotated 15 degrees after each printing pass (24 passes total).
