Artist Biography

Making things by hand is a balm for my soul. For decades I've worked as a graphic designer, mostly stationed behind a computer. Letterpress printing has allowed me to once again create with my hands. I'm very drawn to the tactile nature of the process, whether that involves setting type, carving linocuts, mixing ink or feeding presses. These tasks require skill and the process can sometimes be frustrating, but it can also be cathartic. When creative ideas pop into my head that I can't to let go of, my mind can rest after I've worked them out and printed them on paper. In 1991 I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Stout with a Concentration in Graphic Design, and a Minor in Journalism.

Description of Process

Bagel Story is a limited edition art print made in special collaboration with cartoonist, Drew Dernavich. The limited edition includes 100 signed and numbered prints. The Bagel Story cartoon was conceived by Drew and originally published in black and white in the January 28, 2008 issue of The New Yorker. For our three color interpretation, Drew prepared his drawing for relief printing by hand-carving it onto two linoleum blocks. Christy Nesja hand-composed wood and metal type to work with Drew's image, selected the three ink colors, and printed them on a Vandercook SP15. Paper: Crane Lettra 100% Cotton, 110 lb., Pearl White
