Print with unique pieces of history at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in this one-day workshop.
Take this opportunity to print with blocks that are not often available in workshops! Join us for a fun day of printing with blocks from the "Globe Collection" at the museum. Dating mostly from the mid-20th-century, the Globe Printing collection includes many pieces of handmade type and illustrations. This workshop will unveil a few highlights from the collection and allow participants to work with vintage blocks rarely seen and not often printed at the museum.
The Globe Printing Company of Chicago was once among the leading makers of posters for circuses, attractions and general merchandising. After the business closed, the largely irreplaceable printing blocks were stored in a semi trailer for decades until the trailer’s owner was told to move them or they would be sent to a landfill. Thankfully, someone had the presence of mind to contact the Hamilton museum, and volunteers transferred the trailer’s contents to Two Rivers.

The workshop runs from 9 am to 4 pm. The day starts off with instruction on printing and using a sign press. The majority of the workshop consists of printing with Globe blocks and wood type from a large collection available in the pressroom at the museum.
Everyone breaks for lunch at the same time. Options include purchasing a lunch for $15, bringing your own lunch (a refrigerator is available), or choosing a local restaurant. Clean-up begins at 3 pm and the day finishes up at 4 pm. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes that may get ink on them. Because of the nature of the pressroom and the pieces being used, participants in the workshop must be 18 years or older.
The cost is $125 with all materials provided by the museum. Space is limited, so reservations and a $65 non-refundable deposit are required. Please complete the registration form below to reserve your place. The $60 balance is due at the beginning of the workshop. Cash, credit cards and checks are acceptable.
