Wednesday, October 28

Paul Shaw & Grendl Löfkvist - Calligraphy/Letterpress: Koch Textura
10:00am - 5:00pm
Class size: 20
Cost: $100.00
Access to a cylinder press (Vandercook or Showcard style) is required.

In the morning Paul will deconstruct Koch’s textura in its various forms. Students will learn the letters in a systematic way that allows room for personal interpretation. In the afternoon they will draw and refine the project they wrote out in the morning until they have a compact design. Then Grendl will lead them in cutting it out of sandblasting vinyl and printing it on a Vandercook proof press.

This workshop is a successor to the successful Neuland workshop that Paul Shaw and Grendl Löfkvist led in 2019 at the Hamilton Wayzgoose. It is open to all levels. No prior calligraphy experience is needed.

Thursday, October 29

Alexander Cooper & Tim Hutchinson - The MODUS Type Project
10:00am - 12:00pm
Class size: 20
Cost: $100.00

The workshop will start with a discovery stage, where participants can familiarise themselves with the system via the physical stencil and prepared worksheet. Following this, participants will be tasked with creating a specific letterform or character which will then be uploaded and reviewed in order to provide feedback and inspiration. Participants then go on to design a further set of specified characters which will all come together to form a complete, bespoke typeface. These designs will then be printed using the physical Modus blocks in the London letterpress workshop to create a final type specimen. This process will be live streamed so participants can see their designs realised on paper. Each participant will receive a copy of the Hamilton Modus type specimen. No previous experience is needed.
