cohort of talented book artists who navigate the rich history of bookmaking, using their skills in printing and binding, and scoring to create complex, intimate art objects with diverse content. Speakers will discuss favorite structures, collaborative approaches, and how artists’ books uniquely amplify content and engage readers. Discover how these artists transform printed paper into immersive experiences while exploring themes of family, identity, history, science, nature, and politics through their innovative artists’ books.

In this fast-paced workshop, we’ll look at several artist book structures created from single sheets of paper, printed on just one side, then folded into final form. We’ll explore typesetting and composition with wood and metal type, plus ornaments and vintage cuts. Each participant will compose one page of the collaborative book, then we’ll lock them all up on press and print the form together.

Books should be dry enough to assemble before the end of the weekend, so everyone can bring a few books home. The focus will be on careful typesetting and composition, a few daredevil tricks, and looking at a variety of one-page structures for future book projects.

Jessica Spring

Jessica Spring began her interest in typesetting and printing as a phototypesetter in the 1980s. Her introduction to letterpress printing paralleled the birth of desktop publishing: an exciting time to explore graphic arts. She’s been a letterpress printer ever since, researching historic type composition and inventing Daredevil Furniture to help other printers set type in circles, curves and angles. Her work at Springtide Press in Tacoma entails artist books, broadsides and ephemera, and can be found in collections around the country and abroad. Collaborations and teaching are a vital part of her work, including many years co-producing the Dead Feminists series.
