Metal type for letterpress printing is undoubtedly one of the most detailed and exquisite examples of craftsmanship. At it’s absolute detailed height in the late 1800s, printers were presented with incredible options for creating everything from simple flower embellishments to elaborate systems of illustrations built with ornament.
In this workshop, we’ll look at samples from across the history of typesetting of how type and ornament have been used to develop illustrations of both inanimate objects and people. Working with the impressive Silver Buckle collection, participants will set and print one illustrative piece of their choosing from metal ornament. It’s an entertaining opportunity to use antiquated materials to design a new emoji, a selfie or an homage to your favorite coffee shop!
Since 1999, Jennifer Farrell has operated Starshaped Press in Chicago, focusing on printing everything from business cards and social stationery to music packaging and posters, as well as custom commissions and wholesale cards and prints. All work in the studio is done with metal and wood type, making Starshaped one of the few presses in the country producing commercial work while preserving antique type and related print materials. Jennifer’s work has been repeatedly recognized both in print and design blogs, and has appeared in poster shows throughout the USA and Europe. Work can be viewed at www.starshaped.com.
