Dear Friends of the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum,

The past few weeks have been both busy and rewarding as I’ve immersed myself in learning and understanding the internal operations of the Museum. I’d like to take a moment to share an update on our recent progress and the next steps as we continue to bring our strategic plan to life.

Our focus has been on building a strong foundation for the future—one rooted in stewardship and accountability. Here are a few highlights:

  • Operational Strengthening: Together with our Board and dedicated staff, we’ve been working to ensure smooth and secure access to the many tools and applications that help Hamilton succeed in its daily operations.
  • Supporting Our Team: We’ve partnered with HR advisors to update our employee policies and handbook—bringing them up to date and in alignment with our strategic goals.
  • Safeguarding Our Legacy: A new, long-overdue security system has been installed by our facilities team of Dan, Reed, and Jim to protect our beloved collections and ensure that our Museum is cared for around the clock.
  • Learning and Equity: Gina and I recently participated in a five-day in-service training at the Science Museum of Minnesota as part of the Museums in the Upper Midwest Strategizing for Equity cohort, joining eleven other museums committed to growth and inclusion. This valuable learning continues through the spring.
  • Creative Expression: Abbie and Stephanie have been developing new, Hamilton-inspired items for our Dry Goods Store, while Jen Anne continues applying her specialized craftsmanship in the Wood Shop—each of them helping us celebrate the art of wood type and printing.

Please know we are aware of others’ efforts to look back and, while we respect those individuals’ and groups’ rights to voice their opinions, we also need to forge ahead in our important work for the future of the Museum.

As we move into the winter season, our focus will turn to deepening our documentation of the collections, refining policies and procedures, and continuing to shape a sustainable, mission-driven path forward.

Looking ahead into 2026, we’re planning a retreat with our staff, Board, and myself to review the strategic plan, strengthen alignment between roles and responsibilities, and reignite our shared energy for the exciting work ahead.

We are deeply grateful for your ongoing support and engagement.

With appreciation and optimism,

Beth Kowalski
