Join us for a fun day of printing with blocks from the "Globe Collection" at the museum. Dating mostly from the mid-20th-century, the Globe Printing collection includes many pieces of handmade type and illustrations. This workshop will unveil a few highlights from the collection and allow participants to work with vintage blocks rarely seen and not often printed at the museum.
The Globe Printing Company of Chicago was once among the leading makers of posters for circuses, attractions and general merchandising. After the business closed, the largely irreplaceable printing blocks were stored in a semi trailer for decades until the trailer’s owner was told to move them or they would be sent to a landfill. Thankfully, someone had the presence of mind to contact the Hamilton museum, and volunteers transferred the trailer’s contents to Two Rivers.
The day starts at 9am with a 45-minute tour of the museum and instruction on how to use a sign press. The majority of the workshop consists of printing with wood type from a large collection available in the pressroom at the museum. Lunch is on your own, and there are many restaurants nearby or you can pack your own and eat here at the museum.

Clean-up begins at 4pm and the day finishes up at 5pm. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes that may get ink on them.
The cost is $125 per person with the museum providing ink and 25 sheets (12" x 18") 100 lb white cover stock; 25 sheets of paper is a wonderful number to allow each participant to further their knowledge in letterpress printing and to explore the art form. The workshops are not meant for producing resale work. Feel free to bring paper of a different size, stock, or color. However, keep in mind that handmade paper is not allowed as it may damage the type.
Space is limited, so reservations and a $65 non-refundable deposit when you sign up are required. The $60 to fulfill the full cost of $125 of the workshop is due at the beginning of the workshop. We accept cash, credit card or check. Because of the nature of the pressroom and the pieces being used participants in the workshop must be 18 years or older. Please fill out the registration form below to reserve your place in the workshop. If you have any questions e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 920.794.6272.
