Specimen #8: Appleton Coated

12" x 18"

Specimen No.8 of the Hamilton Wood Type Archiving Program. Designed and printed by the museum using Appleton Coated papers, the museum's exclusive coated paper sponsor.

This poster is printed using William Page's #114 font. William Page started his company in 1856 in Norwich, Conn. and sold his company to Hamilton in 1891. For 35 years, William Page produced some of the most ornate wood type ever produced in the U.S. The slender serifs and ornamental terminals of this Civil War-era font reproduce beautifully on coated paper. Utopia is especially well suited for showing the fine grain of wood type and printer’s reglet (spacing material), which was used to print the background of this specimen. The metallic ink printed on the coated paper creates a very striking image.

Appleton Coated in Combined Locks, Wisconsin is the exclusive sponsor. Founded in 1880 they manufacture and distribute the Utopia and Curious Collection papers.
