Artist Biography

John Christopher has a successful career in graphic design – digitally designing printed matter for many design sectors including publishing, local government, arts, medical education and the environment. He also has a passionate interest in craft processes work made with the touch of the human hand. The combination of the two has resulted in an interest in typography, lettering and letterpress printing. Throughout his career John has been busy squirrelling away really heavy stuff: wood and lead type, spacing material, cast iron presses and guillotines etc. This has enabled him to establish his own Press, Flowers & Fleurons in 2009. Since its inception the Press has appeared in several influential Letterpress exhibitions in the UK, Europe and USA (visit www.flowersandfleurons.com for details).

Description of Process

This print features a rare 19th century wooden Grotesque typeface made by the Meerloo Type Foundry printed onto Zerkall cotton paper in a limited edition of 20. The message Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum (Don’t Let The Bastards Grind You Down) from the Handmaid’s Tale has been repeatedly overprinted using a transparent ink mix, with some characters being turned upside down to create an abstract, disorientating mass of texture. Where appropriate, and to add depth to the texture, the reverse of some characters has been used as well. To reinforce the message a solitary Handmaiden in her red cloak remains confined within her ‘prison’.
