Artist Biography
Sarah Kulfan runs Gallo Pinto Press where she creates limited editions letterpress prints using traditional methods of hand carved linoleum blocks, metal type and impressions made with a Vandercook Universal 1 printing press. Using reduction lino cut techniques, she creates images of the landscapes she's visited in her travels as a climber and first responder. She studied design and illustration at Western Washington University and learned the fine craft of letterpress printing from Stern & Faye Letterpress. Gallo pinto is a traditional dish from Central America consisting of rice and beans as a base. It has a long history and is important to Costa Rican identity, where her maternal grandmother was born.
Description of Process
This fiery sunset, blazing with colors is a typical view from Kamaole 3 on the south side of Maui. This place, this view, I am lucky to have shared this space with so many. But the most significant time was in 2018, my Mom turned 80 and we, her family surrounded her here. Rare times that didn't feel rare then, but now I know they are. Letterpress printed from a single reduction linocut in eleven separate impressions.
