Workshop: The Two-Color Letterpress Poster - June 2 & 3

Join us to learn the aspects of multi-color poster printing.

Workshop at Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum 

You’ll be spending day one on background color and image and then day two setting text and printing. To guide the way we will look at examples from Hamilton, Hatch Show Print, Globe at MICA, and Tribune Showprint posters. The museum collection contains many multi-color plates that when printed together create stunning imagery. Learn about registration, color choice and mixing, type setting, and tips and tricks for printing with vintage blocks.

No experience necessary. The minimum age requirement for workshop participants for this event is 18+.

Jim Moran at Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum 

Jim Moran is the Master Printer & Collections Officer at Hamilton. He runs letterpress workshops, archives the collection and maintains the museum on a daily basis. Previously he had volunteered at Hamilton and donated presses and equipment from his Green Bay, Wisconsin, printing firm, Moran’s Quality Print Shop, where he worked as apprentice, pressman, partner and owner with his father and grandfather for over 35 years.

The workshop runs from 9 am to 4 pm. The day starts off with instruction on printing and using a sign press. The majority of the workshop consists of printing with blocks and wood type from a large collection available in the pressroom at the museum.

Everyone breaks for lunch at the same time. Options include purchasing a lunch for $15, bringing your own lunch (a refrigerator is available), or choosing a local restaurant. Clean-up begins at 3 pm and the day finishes up at 4 pm. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes that may get ink on them. Because of the nature of the pressroom and the pieces being used, participants in the workshop must be 18 years or older.

The cost is $200 with all materials provided by the museum. Space is limited, so reservations and a $110 non-refundable deposit are required. Please complete the registration form below to reserve your place. The $90 balance is due at the beginning of the workshop. Cash, credit cards and checks are acceptable.
