Saturday, June 13, 2020 9:00 am-5:00 pm

This workshop has been canceled. To protect the community, our volunteers and staff, we have decided to temporary close the museum to the public. For current information about how we are monitoring and addressing the situation, we’ve created a page on our website that will be updated regularly:

Metal type for letterpress printing is undoubtedly one of the most exquisite examples of craftsmanship. At its absolute detailed height in the late 1800s, printers were presented with incredible options for creating everything from simple flower embellishments to elaborate systems of illustrations built with ornament. While generally smaller than most wood type, it offers a unique opportunity to develop projects on a different scale.

In this workshop, we’ll dive into the cool collection of metal type and ornament at the exclusive Silver Buckle Press housed within Hamilton. Want to design a new emoji with decades-old ornament? We can do that! Have a great phrase you want to set and print to share with friends? We can do that, too. You’ve taken letterpress before and want to up your game with more advanced typesetting? No problem. All participants will receive guidance in sketching and developing a plan for a print that can be done in one day and have the opportunity to create a small edition to share.

Since 1999, Jennifer Farrell has operated Starshaped Press in Chicago, focusing on printing everything from business cards and social stationery to music packaging and posters, as well as custom commissions and wholesale cards and prints. All work in the studio is done with metal and wood type, making Starshaped one of the few presses in the country producing commercial work while preserving antique type and related print materials. Jennifer’s work has been repeatedly recognized both in print and design blogs, and has appeared in poster shows throughout the USA and Europe. Work can be viewed at www.starshaped.com.

The workshop runs from 9am until 5pm. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes that may get ink on them. The cost is $145 per person with the museum providing all the materials you need.
