Letterpress Workshop: Learn to Lock-up

Saturday, April 18, 2020 9:00 am-5:00 pm

Join third-generation printer, Jim Moran, for this one-day workshop. You will learn how to lock up a chase for platen or cylinder press. Use of the chase, quoins, furniture and tips on proper form imposition will be explored. Tips on type setting to create basic forms will be discussed as well. Some typesetting experience is necessary for this workshop. This workshop is great for individuals that have printed before, but would like to become more proficient at the lock-up process.

Jim Moran will be your instructor for this class. He runs letterpress workshops, archives the collection and maintains the museum on a daily basis. Previously he had volunteered at Hamilton and donated presses and equipment from his Green Bay, Wisconsin, printing firm, Moran’s Quality Print Shop, where he worked as apprentice, pressman, partner and owner with his father and grandfather for over 35 years.

The cost is $125 with all materials provided by the museum. Space is limited, so reservations and a $65 non-refundable deposit are required. The $60 balance is due at the beginning of the workshop. Cash, credit cards and checks are acceptable.

Because of the nature of the pressroom and the pieces being used, participants in the workshop must be 18 years or older. Please fill out the registration form below to reserve your place in the workshop. If you have any questions please e-mail us at info@woodtype.org or call 920-794-6272.
