Join us for an exhibit of restrike letterpress prints from Hamilton's Enquirer and Globe Collections. A restrike is the reprinting of original blocks in the style and sequence that they were originally designed. The Globe Collection was acquired by Hamilton Wood Type in 2005 from Globe Printing in Chicago. The Enquirer Collection was acquired in 2015 from Enquirer Printing in Cincinnati, Ohio. The hand-carved blocks from these collections, were carved in the 1920s through the 1960s and represent some of the finest multi-color letterpress advertising in the U.S.
We will be having a gallery reception on March 6 from 5 to 7pm for this exhibition. Please plan to join us. Jim Moran, museum director, will be speaking about the history of this collection and the process of printing these vintage blocks. We have been reprinting vintage blocks at Hamilton since 2008 both to document our collection and for sales to generate income. These blocks and their reprinting teach us much about the skill and craftsmanship of advertising art in the early 20th century. The exhibit will include not only restrikes but also samples of the blocks themselves and preliminary proofs that show how the colors come together to create the finished print.
