Enquirer Extravaganza Letterpress Workshop: September 25

Saturday, September 25 9:00am – 4:00pm CDT

Print with unique pieces of history at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in this on-site, one-day workshop.

Step right up! Take this opportunity to print with blocks that have never been available to use before in a workshop. Make plans to join us for a fun day of printing with blocks from the "Enquirer Collection" at the museum. This is the first time the Enquirer Collection is available for use by the public.

The Enquirer Collection at the museum contains nearly 500 rare circus, fair and carnival posters, plus approximately 1,500 hand-carved printing plates; more than 5,000 pieces of large wood type; and related correspondence. The Anderson family of Cincinnati founded Enquirer Printing in 1895 and continuously has archived the extensive collection. In the early 1950s it was the only show printer in the Midwest. In 2015 the museum acquired this collection and is working to continue this long legacy.

In this one-day workshop you will become familiarized with type composition, inking methods, and printing. If you're curious about letterpress printing this is a great way to get started.

The workshop runs from 9 am to 4 pm. The day starts off with instruction on printing and using a sign press. The majority of the workshop consists of printing with wood type from a large collection available in the pressroom at the museum.

Everyone breaks for lunch at the same time. Options include purchasing a sub sandwich lunch for $10 (includes sub, chips and beverage), bringing your own lunch (a refrigerator is available) or choosing a local restaurant. Clean-up begins at 3 pm and the day finishes up at 4 pm. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes that may get ink on them.

No experience is necessary for this workshop. Because of the nature of the pressroom and the pieces being used, participants in the workshop must be 18 years or older.

The cost is $125 with all materials provided by the museum. Space is limited, so reservations and a $65 non-refundable deposit are required. The $60 balance is due at the beginning of the workshop. Cash, credit cards and checks are acceptable.

Please fill out the registration form below to reserve your place in the workshop. If you have any questions please e-mail us at info@woodtype.org or call 920-794-6272.
