Whether guided by former Hamilton employees or browsing at your own pace, a visit to Hamilton is sure to leave you with a wealth of wood type know-how.

Self guided tours are available anytime during our regular business hours. Guided tours of the museum are provided daily at 1 and 3 p.m.

Group Tours and Hands-on Experiences

Being a working museum means we have many ways to experience and explore wood type. If you are interested in scheduling a group tour for 15 or more people it must be arranged at least 2 weeks in advance.

Guided tour of the museum:

In this tour for 15-50 people you will receive a guided tour of the museum, where you will learn about historic and decorative wood type from one of the world's largest collections, take a journey through the machines and tools that were used to manufacture wood type, and see working pressrooms where we teach and continue to produce letterpress printed pieces.

Fee: $5 per person
Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Age Level: All ages
Audience size: 15 to 50 people

Guided tour of the museum and hands-on printing demonstration on a printing press:

In this tour for 15-50 people you will receive a guided tour of the museum, you will learn about historic and decorative wood type from one of the world's largest collections, take a journey through the machines and tools that were used to manufacture wood type, and see working pressrooms where we teach and continue to produce letterpress printed pieces. Then each participant will get to print a poster from hand-set wood type that they get to take home with them. We have the type set and ready for your group.

Fee: $10 per person
Duration: 1.5 hours to 2 hours
Age Level: All ages
Audience size: 15 to 50 people

Guided tour of the museum, hands-on experience of setting their name in wood type, and printing on a printing press:

In this tour for 15-20 people you will receive a guided tour of the museum, you will learn about historic and decorative wood type from one of the world's largest collections, take a journey through the machines and tools that were used to manufacture wood type, and see working pressrooms where we teach and continue to produce letterpress printed pieces. Then each participant will get to set their name in wood type and print a personalized poster with their name that they can then take home with them.

Fee: $15 per person
Duration: 2 hours to 3 hours
Age Level: All ages
Audience size: 15 to 20 people

Workshops

If you are interested in taking a public workshop please check the calendar, which we continually update with new events. We also offer private full-day workshops for 6-10 people. Many colleges, universities, design agencies, as well as interested individuals have already done this. You must contact the museum at least 4 weeks in advance. Please contact the museum at info@woodtype.org or 920-794-6272 to arrange your workshop date and get more information.

Private Full Day Workshop for Adults:

The full day workshops costs $125 per student. This option starts at 9 am with a guided tour of the museum. Then we teach the basics of letterpress printing on Showcard presses. Each workshop participant gets to print until 4 pm, after that participants clean and pack up their work and the workshop ends at 5 pm. We provide ink, type, and 25 sheets of 12"x18" paper for each student. You are welcome to bring paper of a different color, stock, or size or even have it delivered to the museum before your workshop. Make sure that your paper is cut to size before arriving at the museum.

Age Level: 18 years old and older
Audience size: 6 to 10 people

Private Full Day Workshop for Students:

The full day workshops costs $75 per participant. This option starts at 9 am with a guided tour of the museum, where you will learn about historic and decorative wood type from one of the world's largest collections, take a journey through the machines and tools that were used to manufacture wood type, and see working pressrooms where we teach and continue to produce letterpress printed pieces. Multi-day Workshop

If you would like to spend more time at the museum we can arrange a workshop at the museum that lasts more than a day. With so much wood type to choose from many groups want the opportunity to print for a few days or even a week.
