Appleton Coated Specimen #7
by Bill Moran
12" x 18" Poster
Specimen No.7 of the Hamilton Wood Type Archiving Program. Designed and printed by the museum using Appleton Coated papers, the museum's exclusive coated paper sponsor.
This poster was printed on Utopia Two:Xtra Green (U2:XG) Ivory Matte 60-pound cover using Hamilton's Fat Face Roman font. Fat Face Roman was a widely copied typeface by all major U.S. type makers. The extremely bold face was the byproduct of early American printing where typefaces were expected to ‘shout.’ This face prints handsomely on this ivory matte sheet giving both a muted finish to the ink, while holding on to the subtle hues of letterpress ink.
Appleton Coated in Combined Locks, Wisconsin is the exclusive sponsor. Founded in 1880 they manufacture and distribute the Utopia and Curious Collection papers.
