This residency program was established to provide opportunities for artists to research and develop their own practice, to further the professional development of artists by enabling the creation and production of new work, and to foster an exchange of ideas and influences.
Hamilton’s rural setting provides a tranquil space to live and work while creating work. The museum and pressroom are located in what was previously a manufacturing facility on the shores of Lake Michigan, which provides a unique working environment. The 45,000 sq. foot museum hosts a 5,000 sq. foot working letterpress studio and three studios specifically for working artists. There are many vintage presses and over 350 cases of type in the working area. Wireless internet access is available in museum, but artists must have own computer. The museum and pressroom are both wheelchair accessible, however housing may not be; please call before applying to discuss specific needs.
Hamilton offers printer's residencies to well-qualified candidates. Please contact Jim Moran at Jim.Moran@woodtype.org for more information. You can review our Residency Policy Agreement here. All applicants must fill out a Project Proposal Form in advance of their visit.
If you are a Chicago area (residing in Cook or Lake county) artist with letterpress experience please consider applying for the TRANSIT residency. TRANSIT and the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum are inviting Chicago area (from Cook or Lake counties) artists, printers, and book artists to apply for a two-week residency at the museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin to take place in Spring 2014. TRANSIT aims to aid in further enriching Chicago’s cultural climate by offering artists from outside Chicagoland the opportunity to make work here and become part of Chicago’s vibrant arts community(-ies), as well as by giving Chicago-area artists the chance to make work elsewhere – encouraging a role as cultural ambassadors – and bringing their work and experiences back to Chicago. Applications are due December 1st, 2013. For more information and the application please visit TRANSIT's website.
