March 31, 9 am-April 1, 5 pm
This is a two-day workshop
(Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1)
Explore the process of printing and making your own books. In this two-day workshop create a book from start to finish. On day one, you can print your own parts for the book using the museum’s fine collection of wood type in the classroom. We will discuss imposition, layout, mock-ups and simple printing techniques. Then on day two, take your letterpress printed pieces and put them together to create your book. As a class we will examine a couple different simple structures for creating your book. Join us to create something truly unique! Museum staff will teach this fun and informative workshop. Jim Moran is the printer extraordinaire and Stephanie Carpenter is a bookmaking maestro.
The workshop runs from 9 am until 5 pm on both days. Friday starts off with a 45-minute tour of the museum and instruction on how to use a sign press. Clean up begins at 4pm and the day finishes up at 5 pm. Lunch is on your own, and there are many restaurants nearby or you can pack your own and eat here at the museum. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes that may get ink on them.
The cost is $275 per person with the museum providing materials and tools. You are welcome to bring your own tools and materials as well. However, keep in mind that hand made paper is not allowed on press as it may damage the type.
Space is limited, so reservations and a $130 non-refundable deposit when you sign up are required. The $145 to fulfill the full cost of $275 of the workshop will be due at the beginning of the workshop. We accept cash, credit card or check. Because of the nature of the pressroom and the pieces being used participants in the workshop must be 18 years or older. No experience with letterpress printing or bookbinding is necessary, but some familiarity is helpful. Please fill out the registration form below to reserve your place in the workshop. If you have any questions please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 920.794.6272.
